Archival material of the month - March 2012 |

The archival material of March is about pigeons. The Domestic Pigeon (Columba livia domestica) was derived from the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). Pigeons and doves constitute the bird family Columbidae. Pigeons now live in urban areas, especially in large cities, causing much trouble. Since they can serve as a source of diseases, they are also known as "flying rats". However, these animals are also valuable and versatile. They used to serve as carrier pigeons, then as flying/sporting pigeons, fancy pigeons and utility pigeons as well. The archival material of the month contains color pictures introducing pigeons from a positive point of view. This document from 1961, showing color images of various pigeon species, certifies that Eugene Kuthy and his pigeons won the first prize.
