Hugó Preisz (1860-1940) was a medical doctor, an operating surgeon, then the head of the Hungarian Royal Institute of Bacteriology, and a professor of the Veterinary Academy (later College) from 1891 to 1906, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the founder of the science of bacteriology in Hungary.
The painting of the elderly Professor Preisz with the dean's chain of the medical faculty can be seen in the reading-room of the Veterinary Science Library. The portrait was painted by Gyula Asztalos. The painting, prepared in 1930, became the property of a provincial truckman from the Phylaxia's stock as a worthless piece. Dénes Karasszon DVM found and purchased in in 1987 for the Museum of Veterinary History established at that time. It was restored by Iván Szkok in 2003. (MMJ)
