Open Access Publishing

Open Access Publishing Opportunity for University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest Authors in 2025

In 2025, authors affiliated with the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest (ÁTE) once again have the opportunity to publish Open Access (OA) articles without paying Article Processing Charges (APC) in the subscribed journals or nearly the entire journal portfolio of the following publishers:

  • Akadémiai Kiadó
  • Cambridge University Press
  • Elsevier
  • SpringerNature
  • Wiley

Details of the agreements and the journal lists are available on the EISZ website.

In most cases, free OA publishing requires that the corresponding author is affiliated with ÁTE and explicitly states the university or one of its units as the institutional affiliation in the article. More details can be found by clicking on the publisher names on the EISZ website.

The Open Access publishing opportunity is part of the university’s EISZ journal package agreements. It applies only to articles accepted or published in 2025 until the allocated quota is exhausted.

Journals with Questionable Publishing Practices

(Source: MTMT website – https://www.mtmt.hu/)

In April 2023, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) established a committee to examine predatory publishing practices. During a meeting on December 13, 2023, the committee reviewed feedback from researchers and adopted recommendations to address emerging concerns.

To implement these recommendations, the MTMT Department follows this procedure:

  • Individual researcher reports on questionable journals are forwarded for evaluation to the secretary of the scientific section, who ensures their review by the section president.
  • Based on the scientific section’s recommendation, considering library and academic standards, the MTMT Department may remove specific journals from the “List of Journals with Questionable Practices – 2024 Edition.”
  • The final 2024 list was established on January 1, 2024, and remains effective. Mid-year changes are only allowed positively (i.e., journals may be removed from the list, but new ones cannot be added).

Committee Decision Highlights:

  • Conference proceedings, book series, and yearbooks in the Norwegian Register will not be flagged as questionable.
  • Journals that have ceased publication will also be removed from the flagged list.

Current Lists:

  • Complete 2024 List
  • Complete 2025 List

Warning! Predatory/Parasitic Journals

Some publishers take advantage of the growing demand for publications and the pressure to publish by offering open-access journals that exist primarily for financial gain.

These journals do not follow proper academic publishing standards and lack or have inadequate peer review, editorial oversight, and quality control. They often accept and publish any submission as long as the authors pay the required fee.

Publications in such journals will not count towards a researcher’s academic record, as they do not qualify as legitimate scientific publications. Therefore, authors should be cautious.

Before Submitting Your Manuscript:

  • Thoroughly research the journal in which you intend to publish.
  • Seek assistance from university librarians to verify the journal’s legitimacy.
