Hugó Preisz (1860-1940) was a medical doctor, an operating surgeon, then the head of the Hungarian Royal Institute of Bacteriology, and a professor of the Veterinary Academy (later College) from 1891 to 1906, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the founder of the science of bacteriology in Hungary.
During the 11th International Congress of the Hungarian Society of Microbiologists, on the 22nd of August, 1991 a memorial tablet was unveiled in building of the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases near the main entrance. In the name of the Hungarian Society of Microbiologists János Mészáros, president, and György Berencsi, secretary general, onbehalf of the University of Veterinary Science, László V. Frenyó, rector, and Professor Sándor Tuboly placed the wreaths of remembrance. The inscription on the tablet is (in Hungarian): To the memory of Hugó Preisz MD, Dr. h. c. (1860-1940), member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, founder of the first Hungarian Institute of Bacteriology. The memorial tablet is placed on the occasion of the centenary of the institute's opening by the Hungarian Society of Microbiologists in 1991. (MMJ)
