Béla Tormay (1839-1906) was an agronomist, veterinarian, counsellor of the minister, corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, head of the Department of Animal Breeding from 1873 to 1888, director of the Hungarian Royal Veterinary College from 1875 to 1888, lecturer in obstetrics and reproductive biology (1875-1882). He was a great pioneer of Hungarian animal breeding, animal health and agriculture.
Upon the proposal of Béla Tormay, on the 11th of February 1880, the Hungarian Veterinary Association, the predecessor of the Hungarian National Veterinary Association, was formed. He had been the elected president of the association for 24 years. On the 11th of June, 1980 a memorial tablet was unveiled on the occasion of the centenary of the foundation of the Hungarian National Veterinary Association on the birthplace of Béla Tormay (1839-1906), outstanding figure of 19th century agriculture, animal breeding and veterinary education. The memorial tablet of copper is the creation of László Juhos. On the left of the tablet, there is a portrait of Professor Tormay in relief, and next to it there is the inscription (in Hungarian): "Béla Tormay, professor of veterinary medicine, eminent organizer of Hungarian agriculture." The memorial speech was delivered by Dénes Karasszon, and the tablet was unveiled by László Várnagy. Jenő Kováts, managing chief veterinarian had a significant role in the organization of the Hungarian National Veterinary Association's centenary jubilee. (MMJ)
